Hi, Dewan,
I love your sense of humor so much!
I had one parathyroid removed the day before yesterday, and I felt so much better right afterwards. I feel like I didn’t have enough batteries for a few years and was a sloth. I was taking long naps every afternoon. Also, I was anxious a lot.
It turns out that I went right out to lunch after the surgery and danced a little at the table.
Like you, I’ve been kidding around that I got my throat slit. My wife bought me a stuffed shark at the hospital gift shop and we took photos of the shark biting my neck.
For others who have been told they need to have this surgery, especially singers… I was most worried about my vocal cords. I love to sing. The surgeon assured me that they would monitor them throughout the surgery. I was able to speak easily the same day. I have a sore throat but it isn’t too bad. I’ve been taking only Tylenol.
I want to throw in a good word for my amazing doctor in NYC, Dr.Eric Genden. He was warm, experienced, and patient. The whole staff was caring and I felt safe.
I was in a state of absolute terror about the surgery, and now I’m so glad I went ahead with it.
Take care of yourselves, everyone!

I’m terrified one ‘slip’ & my career is OVER I’ve been in the profession for more than 40 years … it’s all I know .. even ( as my surgeon said ) a 1% risk of damage to the vocal chords is too much for me … you are much younger than me … of course your car wild heal like that in 4 weeks . My voice is my essence , my heart my MONEY! I’m due to go in your this Autumn … this is probably the last one I’ll do before Surgery … who knows if I’ll be able to return to full vocal capacity …

I just got diagnosed with Hyperparathyroidism today and came across your blog in a search. Heartening that they only removed one and that you are feeling great! (I am assuming you still do years later). I have scheduled appointments with an endocrinologist and a ent guy. So hopefully on the road to recovery soon. My symptoms are not terrible- maybe brain fogginess and some bone aches but nothing I would have ever attributed to something serious. So, yes- thanks doctors! Yours sounds like a hoot.
